The advancements in technology … As children, many of us dreamed of the day when our favorite science fiction movies, comics, and novels would come to life. From universal translators for out-of-this-world languages or flying cars, the world of sci-fi has always had a knack for entertaining our imaginations. But believe it or not, the majority of the technology that we have today has deep roots in the world of science fiction. Inspired by Star Trek, the tales of Jules Verne, and even Iron Man, today’s sci-fi classics are making their way into our everyday lives.
Take the StarTAC flip phone for example. Though most of us saw it appear in Motorola retail shops in 1996, the concept of this mobile device actually made its first debut 30 years earlier in Star Trek as “The Communicator”. Looking back, it may have sounded ridiculous to believe that we would be able to communicate with each other wirelessly (and now hands-free), but today, it’s a rare sight to not see anyone without a smartphone or tablet on their person at all times.
Whether we like to believe it or not, science fiction has played a very significant role in the advancements in technology we’ve made in just the past 15 to 20 years.
